For many years, artists of color have encounted barriers within the art community's mainstream. As an artist, it my goal to work towards removing the barriers that have limited our exposure and acceptance into the world art communities mainstream. African-American artist Robert Duncansen, left the States and went to Canada to pursue his art and gain little to no support in that time. I'm presently working to estblished an exhibit in the Indiana State Museum to showcase the artworks of artists who are African-American. This exhibit will feature present day living artists from around the State of Indiana and gear towards providing a continous mainstream venue for artists of color with other exhibits to follow. While this has been tried before, time is now to correct these issues; to focus on the quality of the artwork not the color of the artist's skin.
There are many publications available(,ART ON MY MIND: VISUAL POLITICS BY BELL HOOKS/ ART AND FEAR BY DAVID BAYLES) that address these issues/barriers; a greater focus must be given to changing the way artists of color are viewed. It is my strong belief that artists of color must be in the mainstream of the art world to be fully recogonized both in world history and the American History to leave a legacy for each generation
